Pool News - Swim Test Policy and Procedures

Published by admin under Pool Committee

Due to some questions and comments that were brought up by residents during the Pools opening weekend, the Lenah Run Pool Committee has revised Rule #4. Rule #4 is now more specific concerning the swim test and parent/guardians responsibilities when a child is unable to pass the swim test. Having swim tests and active parental involvement with young children helps to ensure a safe environment. The Life Guard Staff is here to ensure a safe environment and provide excellent emergency services when needed.

All Children are required to take a swim test to allow for independent swimming and recreation within the facility. There will be a “Swim Test Sign In Sheet” at the guard desk which will be used to record all results for the 2008 swim season. Children age nine years or under must be accompanied and supervised by a responsible person age fourteen years or older while in the pool area. Upon successful completion of the swim test, each child will be given a silicone wrist band that indicates they are eligible for in independent swimming. Once your child has passed the swim test you are still responsible for watching them while at the facility. This includes all children and guests in your care.

Children age 10, 11, 12 and 13 may use the pool unaccompanied by an adult only after successful completion of a swim test. The test to qualify for independent swimming will consist of:

Swimming the width of the pool followed by the treading of water for 45 seconds. Swimmers may be asked by the lifeguard to retest if necessary to confirm results.

Children who cannot pass the swim test and are not tall enough to touch the bottom of the pool in the shallow end of the pool are required to have a parent/guardian within arms reach at all times, regardless of flotation devices. Children who pass the swim test have access to the entire pool, except during break. If possible, we suggest that all children have a swim buddy. At the staff’s discretion, children who cannot pass the swim test but are able to touch the bottom of the pool, are not required to have a parent in the pool. The child must be in the shallow end of the pool, with the parent actively watching their child. The parent is responsible for ensuring that their child remains in water where the water depth is chest level, or less, when flat footed.

Teens and Adults ~ Skillful swimmers can use the entire pool. You will not be required to take a swim test. Teenagers and adults, who are NOT proficient swimmers, are restricted to areas of the pool where water depth is chest level, or less, when flat-footed. You may be asked to pass a swim test if you attempt to swim in deep water and demonstrate questionable swimming skills.
